Nettetlining-out still remains customary in this region, its discontinuance is inevitable due to the lack of a system for its cultivation. This study examined the musical tradition, characteristics, and performance practice of lined-hymn singing as it exists in three African American Baptist churches of the northern Mississippi Delta region. NettetAfter each line, in a manner quite different from the syllabic style of most hymns, the congregation would sing the lined-out phrase, adding flourishes with highs and lows to a melody that had pentatonic or modal tendencies.
