For me, the deffinitive version of Chrono Trigger, for someone who can't read in japanese, is playing the Kajar Laboratories' retranslation patch for the SNES version. The best emulator to play it would be the latest BSNES version (Filter: NTSC RGB / Shader: CRT-Royale-Kurozumi).
